Decubitus Ulcers
Decubitus ulcers, also known as pressure sores or bedsores, are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue that occur when there is prolonged pressure on the skin. They commonly develop in areas where bones are close to the skin, such as the heels, elbows, and sacrum. These ulcers can lead to serious infections and complications if not treated promptly.
The primary cause of decubitus ulcers is immobility, often seen in individuals who are bedridden or wheelchair-bound. Factors such as moisture, friction, and shear can worsen the condition. Prevention includes regular repositioning, maintaining skin hygiene, and using specialized mattresses or cushions to relieve pressure.
