Portuguese nobility
The Portuguese nobility refers to the social class of aristocrats in Portugal who held titles and land, often serving the monarchy. This class emerged during the Middle Ages and played a significant role in the country's political and economic life, especially during the Age of Discoveries when Portugal expanded its territories overseas.
Noble titles included dukes, counts, and barons, and these individuals often had significant influence in the royal court. The nobility's power began to decline in the 19th century with the rise of liberalism and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy, leading to the eventual abolition of noble privileges.
