Popcorn Corn
Popcorn corn is a specific type of corn known for its ability to pop when heated. It belongs to the species Zea mays everta, which is the only type of corn that can explode into fluffy, edible pieces. The kernels have a hard outer shell and a starchy interior, which creates steam when heated, leading to the popping effect.
When heated to around 356°F (180°C), the moisture inside the kernel turns to steam, building pressure until the kernel bursts open. This process results in the light and airy snack that is popular in movie theaters and at home. Popcorn can be enjoyed plain or flavored with various seasonings.
