Polydactyly
Polydactyly is a genetic condition where a person is born with extra fingers or toes. This can happen on one hand or foot, or on both. The extra digits can vary in size and functionality, ranging from small, non-functional nubs to fully formed fingers or toes. Polydactyly is often inherited, meaning it can run in families, but it can also occur spontaneously without a family history.
In many cases, polydactyly does not cause any health problems and may not require treatment. However, some individuals may choose to have surgery to remove the extra digits for cosmetic reasons or to improve hand or foot function. This condition is often associated with other genetic syndromes, such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome or Ellis-van Creveld syndrome.
