Perfluorinated Carboxylic Acids
Perfluorinated Carboxylic Acids (PFCAs) are a group of synthetic chemicals characterized by a carbon chain fully saturated with fluorine atoms, ending with a carboxylic acid group. They are used in various industrial applications, including the production of non-stick coatings, water-repellent fabrics, and firefighting foams.
These compounds are persistent in the environment and can accumulate in living organisms, raising concerns about their potential health effects. PFCAs are part of a larger class of chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are often referred to as "forever chemicals" due to their resistance to degradation.
