Peranakan Culture
Peranakan culture, also known as Straits Chinese culture, emerged from the intermarriage between Chinese immigrants and local Malays in the 15th to 17th centuries. This unique blend of traditions is most prominently found in Malaysia and Singapore, where the descendants, known as Baba (men) and Nyonya (women), developed distinct customs, languages, and cuisines.
The Peranakan community is renowned for its vibrant textiles, intricate beadwork, and delicious dishes like laksa and nasi lemak. Their rich heritage is celebrated through traditional ceremonies, art forms, and the preservation of the Malay and Chinese languages, showcasing a harmonious fusion of both cultures.
