Straits Chinese
The term "Straits Chinese" refers to the descendants of Chinese immigrants who settled in the Malay Archipelago, particularly in Malaysia and Singapore, during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They are also known as Peranakan or Baba-Nyonya, with "Baba" referring to the males and "Nyonya" to the females. This community has developed a unique culture that blends Chinese traditions with local Malay influences.
Straits Chinese are known for their distinctive cuisine, which combines Chinese cooking techniques with local ingredients, resulting in dishes like laksa and nasi lemak. They also have their own traditional clothing, such as the kebaya for women and baju kurung for men, reflecting their rich cultural heritage.
