Pelusium
Pelusium was an ancient city located in the northeastern part of Egypt, near the Nile Delta. It served as a significant port and military stronghold, especially during the Pharaonic and Hellenistic periods. The city was strategically positioned at the entrance of the Nile, making it an important trade hub and a gateway for travelers and goods entering Egypt.
The city is often associated with the goddess Sekhmet, who was worshipped there, and it played a role in various historical events, including conflicts between Egypt and Persia. Pelusium eventually declined in importance and was largely abandoned by the Middle Ages, leaving behind ruins that reflect its once-thriving status.
