Panthera leo persica
The Panthera leo persica, commonly known as the Asiatic lion, is a subspecies of lion found primarily in the Gir Forest National Park in India. These lions are slightly smaller than their African counterparts and have a distinctive fold of skin along their bellies. They typically live in prides, which are social groups consisting of related females and their offspring, along with a few males.
Asiatic lions once roamed across the Middle East and into India, but their population has drastically declined due to habitat loss and hunting. Conservation efforts have helped increase their numbers, and they are currently classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
