Ovarian Follicle Development
Ovarian follicle development is a crucial process in the female reproductive system. It begins with primordial follicles, which contain immature eggs called oocytes. These follicles undergo several stages, including primary, secondary, and tertiary (or Graafian) follicles, as they mature. Hormones like FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) play a key role in stimulating this development.
As follicles mature, they produce increasing amounts of estrogen, which is essential for regulating the menstrual cycle. Eventually, one dominant follicle is selected to release its egg during ovulation, while the remaining follicles undergo atresia, a process of degeneration. This cycle is vital for fertility and reproductive health.
