Folliculogenesis
Folliculogenesis is the process by which ovarian follicles develop and mature in the ovaries. It begins with primordial follicles, which contain immature eggs, and progresses through several stages, including primary, secondary, and tertiary follicles. Each stage involves the growth of the egg and the surrounding granulosa cells, which support and nourish the developing egg.
During folliculogenesis, hormonal signals, particularly from follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), regulate the growth and maturation of the follicles. Ultimately, one dominant follicle is selected to ovulate, releasing a mature egg for potential fertilization, while the others undergo atresia, or degeneration.
