Optimates
The term "Optimates" refers to a political faction in ancient Rome that represented the interests of the aristocratic elite. They were typically conservative and sought to maintain the power and privileges of the Senate and the traditional ruling class. The Optimates often opposed reforms that would benefit the lower classes and aimed to preserve the status quo in Roman society.
In contrast to the Populares, who advocated for the rights of the common people, the Optimates favored a more hierarchical structure of governance. Key figures among the Optimates included politicians like Cicero and Sulla, who worked to strengthen the authority of the Senate and limit the influence of popular assemblies.
