Operation Chastise
"Operation Chastise" was a British military mission during World War II, conducted on the night of May 16-17, 1943. The operation aimed to destroy key dams in the Ruhr Valley of Germany, which were crucial for the Nazi war effort. The mission utilized specially designed bouncing bombs, created by engineer Barnes Wallis, to breach the dams and cause flooding in industrial areas.
The operation was carried out by the Royal Air Force's 617 Squadron, famously known as the "Dambusters." Despite facing heavy defenses, the squadron successfully breached the Möhne and Eder dams, causing significant damage and disruption to German industry. The mission became a symbol of innovative military strategy and courage.
