Oosterschelde Estuary
The Oosterschelde Estuary is a large estuary located in the southwestern part of the Netherlands. It is part of the Zeeland province and connects the North Sea to the Oosterschelde National Park. The estuary is known for its rich biodiversity, including various fish species, birds, and unique habitats like mudflats and salt marshes.
The estuary plays a crucial role in flood protection, especially after the devastating North Sea Flood of 1953. To manage water levels and protect the surrounding areas, the Oosterschelde Storm Surge Barrier was constructed. This engineering marvel helps regulate the flow of water while allowing marine life to thrive.
