Ohlone Language
The Ohlone language refers to a group of related languages spoken by the Ohlone people, who are indigenous to the central California coast. These languages belong to the larger Penutian language family and include several dialects, such as Muwekma and Rumsen. The Ohlone languages were traditionally used for communication among the various tribes in the region.
Due to colonization and cultural changes, the number of fluent speakers declined significantly over the years. Today, efforts are being made to revitalize the Ohlone language through educational programs and community initiatives, aiming to preserve this important aspect of Ohlone heritage and identity.
