Salinan Language
The Salinan language is a now-extinct language that was spoken by the Salinan people, an Indigenous group from central California. It belongs to the Hokan language family and was primarily used in the regions around the Salinas River. The language had two main dialects: Northern Salinan and Southern Salinan.
Efforts to document and preserve the Salinan language have been made, especially through the work of linguists and anthropologists. Although the last fluent speakers passed away in the 20th century, some revitalization efforts are ongoing, focusing on teaching the language to new generations and preserving its cultural heritage.
