Ogoni People
The Ogoni People are an ethnic group located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. They primarily inhabit the Ogoniland area, which is known for its rich oil reserves. The Ogoni are part of the larger Ibo ethnic group and have their own distinct language, called Ogoni or Khana.
Historically, the Ogoni have faced significant environmental and social challenges due to oil exploration and extraction by multinational companies. This has led to widespread pollution and degradation of their land, prompting the Ogoni to advocate for their rights and environmental justice, notably through the efforts of Ken Saro-Wiwa, a prominent Ogoni activist.
