No. 617 Squadron
No. 617 Squadron, also known as the "Dambusters," is a Royal Air Force unit formed during World War II. It is famous for its innovative bombing raids, particularly the attack on German dams in May 1943 using specially designed bouncing bombs created by Barnes Wallis. The squadron's successful mission significantly disrupted German industrial production.
The squadron was established on March 21, 1943, and operated under the command of Wing Commander Guy Gibson. After the war, No. 617 Squadron continued to serve in various roles, including nuclear deterrence and conventional bombing, and remains an active unit within the RAF today.
