The Nez Perce War was a conflict between the Nez Perce tribe and the United States government that took place from 1877 to 1878. The war began when the U.S. government attempted to force the Nez Perce to relocate to a smaller reservation in Idaho, which they resisted. Led by Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce sought to escape to Canada, resulting in a series of battles against U.S. troops. The conflict involved several significant engagements, including the battles of White Bird Canyon and Big Hole. Despite their initial successes, the Nez Perce were eventually outnumbered and outmaneuvered. The war ended with the surrender of Chief Joseph and his followers, leading to their forced relocation to a reservation in Kansas.
