Treaty of Fort Laramie
The Treaty of Fort Laramie was signed in 1851 between the United States government and various Native American tribes, including the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. The treaty aimed to establish peace and define territorial boundaries for the tribes in the Great Plains, while allowing safe passage for settlers and travelers along the Oregon Trail.
In exchange for recognizing tribal lands, the U.S. promised to provide annual payments and goods to the tribes. However, the treaty was often violated by settlers and the government, leading to conflicts and further treaties that diminished Native American land and rights over time.
