Vestibular Schwannomas
Vestibular schwannomas, also known as acoustic neuromas, are benign tumors that develop on the vestibular nerve, which is responsible for balance and spatial orientation. These tumors arise from Schwann cells, which produce the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers. Although they are non-cancerous, they can grow and press against nearby structures, leading to various symptoms.
Common symptoms of vestibular schwannomas include hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and balance issues. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques such as MRI scans. Treatment options may include observation, surgical removal, or radiation therapy, depending on the tumor's size and the patient's overall health.
