Neptune's Staircase
Neptune's Staircase is a series of eight interconnected locks located on the Caledonian Canal in Scotland. It is situated near the village of Banavie, close to Fort William. The staircase raises boats approximately 20 meters (66 feet) over a distance of about 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles), allowing them to navigate the elevation changes between Loch Lochy and Loch Eil.
Constructed in the early 19th century, Neptune's Staircase was designed by engineer Thomas Telford. It is the longest lock flight in the UK and is a popular tourist attraction, showcasing the engineering marvels of the time while providing a vital link for maritime traffic in the region.
