NF2 gene
The NF2 gene is a human gene located on chromosome 22 that provides instructions for producing a protein called merlin. This protein plays a crucial role in regulating cell growth and maintaining the stability of cell structures. It acts as a tumor suppressor, helping to prevent the formation of tumors, particularly in the nervous system.
Mutations in the NF2 gene can lead to neurofibromatosis type 2, a genetic disorder characterized by the development of benign tumors called schwannomas on the nerves. Individuals with this condition may experience hearing loss, balance issues, and other neurological symptoms due to the impact of these tumors on nerve function.
