Myringotomy
Myringotomy is a surgical procedure that involves making a small incision in the tympanic membrane, or eardrum, to relieve pressure and drain fluid from the middle ear. This procedure is often performed to treat conditions like otitis media, which is an infection or inflammation of the middle ear, especially in children.
During a myringotomy, a doctor may also place a small tube, called a tympanostomy tube, into the incision to help keep the ear ventilated and prevent future fluid buildup. The procedure is typically done under local or general anesthesia and is considered safe with a quick recovery time.
