Mother Ann
Mother Ann, also known as Ann Lee, was the founder of the Shaker religious movement in the United States during the 18th century. Born in England in 1736, she believed in a life of celibacy, communal living, and equality between genders. Her teachings emphasized simplicity, pacifism, and a direct relationship with God.
In 1774, Mother Ann and her followers emigrated to America, where they established several communities. The Shakers became known for their unique worship practices, including ecstatic dancing and singing. They also gained recognition for their craftsmanship, particularly in furniture making and agriculture, which reflected their values of hard work and simplicity.
