Mirabal Sisters
The Mirabal Sisters, known as "Las Mariposas" (The Butterflies), were four Dominican women who became symbols of resistance against the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. The sisters—Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa—actively opposed Trujillo's regime, which was marked by severe repression and human rights abuses. Their activism included organizing underground movements and advocating for political change.
On November 25, 1960, the sisters were brutally murdered by Trujillo's secret police. Their deaths sparked outrage and became a catalyst for the eventual overthrow of Trujillo's regime. Today, November 25 is commemorated as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, honoring their legacy and the fight for women's rights.
