Minimal Change Disease
Minimal Change Disease (MCD) is a kidney disorder that primarily affects children, leading to nephrotic syndrome. In this condition, the kidneys lose their ability to filter proteins properly, resulting in high levels of protein in the urine and swelling in various parts of the body. The exact cause of MCD is often unknown, but it can sometimes be associated with allergies or infections.
Diagnosis typically involves a kidney biopsy, although many cases are treated based on symptoms alone. Treatment usually includes corticosteroids, which can help reduce inflammation and restore kidney function. Most patients respond well to treatment, and the prognosis is generally favorable.
