Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary leader in Mexico. Born on May 8, 1753, in Pénjamo, he is best known for his role in initiating the Mexican War of Independence against Spanish rule. On September 16, 1810, he issued the famous "Grito de Dolores," calling for the end of Spanish oppression and the establishment of a more just society.
Hidalgo's movement gained significant support, but he was captured and executed by Spanish forces in 1811. Despite his death, he is celebrated as a national hero in Mexico, and Independence Day is commemorated annually on September 16 in his honor.
