José María Morelos was a key leader in the Mexican War of Independence against Spanish rule. Born on September 30, 1765, in Valladolid, he became a priest and later joined the independence movement after the death of Miguel Hidalgo in 1811. Morelos was known for his military skills and strategic planning, leading several successful campaigns.
He played a significant role in drafting the Sentiments of the Nation in 1813, which outlined the goals of the independence movement. Morelos was captured by Spanish forces in 1815 and executed, but his efforts laid the groundwork for Mexico's eventual independence in 1821.
