Marquess of Atholl
The Marquess of Atholl is a title in the peerage of Scotland, created in 1703. It is associated with the historic region of Atholl, located in the central Highlands. The title has been held by the Murray family, who have played significant roles in Scottish history, particularly during the Jacobite uprisings.
The current holder of the title is the 10th Marquess, who succeeded in 1996. The Marquessate is notable for its connection to the Atholl Highlanders, a private army raised by the family in the 18th century, which is still active today as a ceremonial unit.
