Maher Arar
Maher Arar is a Syrian-born Canadian engineer who became widely known after being wrongfully detained in the United States in 2002. He was sent to Syria for interrogation, where he faced torture, due to a mistaken belief that he was linked to terrorism.
After his release in 2003, Arar returned to Canada and sought justice for his ordeal. In 2006, a public inquiry concluded that he was innocent and had been wrongly deported. The Canadian government later apologized and provided him with compensation for the suffering he endured during his detention.
