Māori Health Model
The Māori Health Model, known as Te Whare Tapa Whā, is a holistic approach to health that emphasizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being. It is represented by a four-sided house, where each side symbolizes a different aspect of health: Taha Tinana (physical health), Taha Hinengaro (mental health), Taha Whānau (family health), and Taha Wairua (spiritual health). This model highlights the importance of balance and harmony among these dimensions for overall well-being.
Incorporating cultural values and practices, the Māori Health Model recognizes the significance of whānau (family) and community support in achieving health outcomes. It also emphasizes the role of Māori traditions and beliefs in promoting health, encouraging individuals to engage with their cultural identity. By focusing on a comprehensive view of health, the model aims to improve health disparities faced by Māori communities.
