Living Goddess
The "Living Goddess," known as Kumari, is a revered figure in Nepalese culture, particularly among the Newar community. She is a young prepubescent girl selected from a specific lineage and believed to be the physical embodiment of the goddess Taleju. The selection process is rigorous, involving various tests to ensure she meets the spiritual and physical criteria.
Once chosen, the Living Goddess lives in the Kumari Ghar (Kumari's residence) in Kathmandu and participates in religious ceremonies and festivals. Her role is both spiritual and cultural, symbolizing purity and divine protection for the community. However, her reign ends with menstruation, after which a new Kumari is selected.
