Little Rock Nine
The Little Rock Nine refers to a group of nine African American students who enrolled at Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas in 1957. Their enrollment was a significant event in the American civil rights movement, as it challenged the segregation laws in place following the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education.
The students faced intense opposition, including hostility from white students and resistance from the Arkansas National Guard, ordered by Governor Orval Faubus to prevent their entry. Eventually, federal intervention by President Dwight D. Eisenhower ensured the students could attend the school, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for educational equality.
