Limbourg brothers
The Limbourg brothers were three Dutch painters, Herman, Paul, and Johannes, active during the early 15th century. They are best known for their exquisite manuscript illuminations, particularly the Book of Hours commissioned by the Duke of Berry. Their work is characterized by vibrant colors, intricate details, and a keen sense of realism.
The brothers were born in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, and later moved to France. Their most famous piece, the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, showcases their talent and has become a significant example of Gothic art. The Limbourg brothers' contributions greatly influenced the development of Renaissance art.
