Lepers
Lepers are individuals affected by leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. This condition primarily affects the skin, nerves, and mucous membranes, leading to skin lesions and potential nerve damage. Leprosy is not highly contagious and is primarily spread through prolonged close contact with an infected person.
Historically, people with leprosy faced significant stigma and were often isolated from society in designated areas known as leper colonies. Today, leprosy is treatable with antibiotics, and early diagnosis can prevent severe complications. Efforts continue to reduce the stigma associated with the disease and improve the lives of those affected.
