Languages of Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is home to over 800 distinct languages, making it one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world. These languages belong to several different language families, including Austronesian and Papuan languages. Many communities speak their local languages, often using Tok Pisin, a creole language, as a lingua franca for communication between different language speakers.
The rich linguistic diversity reflects the country's varied cultures and traditions. Each language carries unique cultural significance and is often tied to specific regions and ethnic groups. Efforts are being made to preserve these languages, as many are at risk of extinction due to globalization and urbanization.
