King Joseph I of Portugal
King Joseph I of Portugal reigned from 1750 to 1777. He was the son of King John V and became king after his father's death. His reign is noted for the influence of his prime minister, Marquês de Pombal, who implemented significant reforms in the government and economy, especially after the devastating 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Joseph I was known for his interest in the arts and culture, promoting the development of theaters and music. Despite his contributions, he struggled with health issues, which led to a more passive role in governance later in his reign. He died in 1777, succeeded by his daughter, Queen Maria I.
