King Ferdinand II of León
King Ferdinand II of León was a significant ruler in medieval Spain, reigning from 1157 to 1188. He was a member of the House of Jiménez and played a crucial role in the political landscape of the Kingdom of León. His reign was marked by efforts to consolidate power and expand his territory, particularly through military campaigns against the Moors.
Ferdinand II is also known for his support of the Catholic Church and the promotion of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage. His marriage to Urraca of Portugal helped strengthen alliances, and he was instrumental in the eventual unification of the kingdoms of León and Castile.
