King Devanampiya Tissa
King Devanampiya Tissa was a significant ruler of ancient Sri Lanka, reigning from around 247 to 207 BCE. He is best known for his conversion to Buddhism, which marked a pivotal moment in the island's history. His reign is often associated with the establishment of Buddhism as the state religion, leading to the construction of many stupas and monasteries.
Under King Devanampiya Tissa's leadership, Sri Lanka experienced a period of peace and prosperity. He is credited with fostering diplomatic relations with the Maurya Empire in India, particularly with Emperor Ashoka, who sent missionaries to spread Buddhism in the region. This helped solidify the cultural and religious foundations of Sri Lanka.
