Karl Schmidt-Rottluff
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff was a German painter and printmaker, born on December 1, 1884, in Rottluff, a suburb of Chemnitz. He was a founding member of the expressionist group known as Die Brücke, which aimed to create art that expressed emotional experiences rather than realistic depictions. His work is characterized by bold colors and strong lines, often depicting landscapes, portraits, and still lifes.
Throughout his career, Schmidt-Rottluff experimented with various styles and techniques, including woodcut printing. He became known for his unique approach to color and form, which influenced many artists in the Expressionism movement. He continued to create art until his death on August 10, 1976.
