Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival
The Kırkpınar Oil Wrestling Festival is an annual event held in Edirne, Turkey, and is one of the oldest sports festivals in the world. It dates back to the 14th century and features wrestlers, known as pehlivans, who compete while covered in olive oil. The festival attracts thousands of spectators and includes various cultural activities alongside the wrestling matches.
During the festival, wrestlers wear traditional leather outfits called kispet and engage in matches on a grassy field. The event culminates in the crowning of the Kırkpınar Ağası, the champion wrestler, who receives a trophy and a symbolic prize. The festival is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
