Japanese Zen
Japanese Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that emphasizes meditation and direct experience. It originated in China as Chan Buddhism and was later brought to Japan, where it developed its unique practices and philosophies. Zen focuses on achieving enlightenment through zazen, or seated meditation, and encourages practitioners to observe their thoughts and feelings without attachment.
Zen also influences various aspects of Japanese culture, including art, tea ceremonies, and garden design. The simplicity and minimalism found in Zen gardens and ink wash painting reflect the Zen principle of finding beauty in simplicity and the present moment.
