Irom Sharmila
Irom Sharmila is an Indian civil rights activist known for her long-standing hunger strike against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, which grants special powers to the Indian military in conflict areas. She began her protest in 2000 after the tragic killing of ten civilians in Malom, Manipur, highlighting the need for justice and human rights in the region.
Sharmila's hunger strike lasted for 16 years, making her one of the longest-running hunger strikers in the world. She has received international recognition for her efforts, becoming a symbol of non-violent resistance and inspiring many in the fight for social justice and peace in India.
