Ideological State Apparatus
The term "Ideological State Apparatus" (ISA) refers to institutions and practices that propagate the dominant ideology of a society, shaping individuals' beliefs and values. Coined by the French philosopher Louis Althusser, ISAs include schools, religious organizations, family structures, and media. These entities work to maintain social order by instilling ideologies that align with the interests of the ruling class.
Unlike the Repressive State Apparatus, which uses force to maintain control, ISAs function through persuasion and socialization. They influence how people perceive their roles in society, often promoting conformity and acceptance of the status quo. This process is crucial for sustaining the existing power dynamics within a culture.
