House of Lorraine
The House of Lorraine is a noble family that originated in the region of Lorraine in northeastern France. It became prominent in the medieval period and played a significant role in European politics, particularly during the Hundred Years' War and the Italian Wars. The family produced several notable rulers, including Duke René II and Duke Francis I.
In the 16th century, the House of Lorraine gained further influence through strategic marriages, notably with the House of Guise. The family was also connected to the Habsburgs, enhancing its power in Europe. The House of Lorraine eventually became the ruling dynasty of the Duchy of Lorraine until it was annexed by France in 1766.
