History of Islam in Bulgaria
The history of Islam in Bulgaria began in the late 14th century when the Ottoman Empire conquered the region. This led to the establishment of a significant Muslim population, primarily among the Turks and Pomaks, who are Bulgarian Muslims. Over the centuries, Islam influenced local culture, architecture, and society, with many mosques built during the Ottoman period.
After the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878, the Muslim population faced challenges, including political and social changes. Despite this, Islam remains a recognized religion in Bulgaria today, with a notable presence, particularly in the Rhodope Mountains and Northeastern Bulgaria.
