Henry Louis Vivian Derozio
Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was an Indian poet, teacher, and social reformer born in 1809 in Calcutta. He is best known for his contributions to English literature in India and is often regarded as one of the first Indian poets in English. Derozio's poetry reflected themes of love, nature, and social issues, and he played a significant role in the Bengal Renaissance.
As a teacher at the Hindu College, Derozio inspired his students to think critically and embrace modern ideas. He encouraged them to question traditional beliefs and engage in discussions about social reform. His influence on his students led to the formation of the Young Bengal movement, which aimed to promote rational thinking and progressive values in society.
