Hedwig of Poland
Hedwig of Poland, also known as Jadwiga, was a queen of Poland who reigned from 1384 until her death in 1399. Born in 1374, she was the daughter of Louis I of Anjou, the King of Hungary and Poland. Hedwig became queen at a young age and was known for her intelligence and strong leadership. She played a crucial role in the political landscape of Poland, particularly in the union with Lithuania.
Hedwig was also a significant figure in promoting Christianity in Lithuania and supported various charitable works. She was married to Władysław II Jagiełło, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, which helped solidify the alliance between Poland and Lithuania. After her death, she was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1997, reflecting her lasting impact on Polish history and culture.
