Hastati
The Hastati were the youngest and least experienced soldiers in the ancient Roman army, primarily serving during the Republican period. They formed the front line of the Roman battle formation known as the manipular legion, equipped with a short sword called a gladius and a large shield called a scutum. Their role was to engage the enemy first, using their agility and speed.
Typically, the Hastati were armed with lighter armor compared to their more seasoned counterparts, the Principes and Triarii. As they gained experience in battle, they could advance to these higher ranks, reflecting their growth in skill and responsibility within the Roman military structure.
